Starting a Management or Music Internship is an excellent way to break into the music industry and land a music industry job with a record label or management Agency. Whether you want to get involved in the production, A&R, management, publishing, marketing, and/or operation departments, getting your foot in the door and landing the music industry job is essential.Whether you are looking to work with a management agency or a music industry job in a rock record label like Interscope Records, a pop record label like Jive Records or a hip hop record label like Def Jam, the key is getting in. So regardless of your personal taste in music, the key is just to get your foot in the door, even if you have to start at a different agency or label and work your way around.We all know of David Geffen who founded Asylum Records (Warner Bros) and later on launched Geffen Records (Universal) that was home to Guns and Roses, Nirvana, The Counting Crows, etc. What few people realize is that David Geffen began his career working in the mail room at the William Morris Agency. Today he is one of the greatest Music Moguls of our times. Kevin Liles who presently is the Executive Vice President to the Warner Music Group and was the President of Hip Hop record label Def Jam Music started out as an intern. He was an intern under Russell Simmons with Def Jam and went on to becoming President of that label! These are only a few success stories to the importance of internship programs.Internships and assistants are the two best ways to break into the market from an “entry-level” type of position at an Artist Management Agency or Record label.
